Running for Resilience: The Disney Princess Half Marathon as a former Caregiver’s Challenge
As a caregiver, I also worked full-time, managing two important departments that required weekend work. The stress of balancing my career with caregiving took its toll, and over time, my health began to deteriorate. I have a family history of cardiac issues and have been on blood pressure medication for over 15 years. But as the years passed, the stress of caring for my mom grew, and I found myself needing additional medication to control my blood pressure and elevated heart rate.
The more I tried to hold everything together, the more I felt myself slipping. The weight of the responsibility began to show, and I started gaining weight, which discouraged me from going out. I feared that people wouldn’t understand what I was going through. I wasn’t simply surviving day to day—I was surviving minute to minute.
During these moments of intense stress, I found myself missing my dad even more. He was a doctor, and I desperately wished he were still alive to help guide me through my mom’s medical condition. Thankfully, he exposed me to valuable healthcare tips and knowledge that I used to guide me through my mom's medical journey.
This caregiving experience, though difficult, has inspired me to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon and raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Caregiving is challenging, but I know I am not alone. Your support can help provide resources and support for families facing similar struggles, and help fund the research needed to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Your generosity can make a lasting impact in the fight against Alzheimer's and provide much-needed assistance to caregivers who are struggling to balance everything, just like I did.
