A Caregiver’s Journey: Finding Motivation and Magic in the Disney Princess Half Marathon
As my journey as a dementia caregiver continued, the experiences became more unimaginable and difficult to navigate. I remember coming home from work one day to find that my mom had thrown away the majority of my clothes, gave away our big-screen TV, and disposed of our sofa cushions—but oddly, she left the sofa itself. It was mind-boggling to witness the erratic behavior, and I was completely unprepared for the emotional toll it would take on me.
At times, I couldn’t even have a conversation with my mom because she was so agitated. I recall how, during a road trip, she tried to open the car door while we were driving on the highway, and how she emptied our bank accounts without understanding the consequences. Her hallucinations were out of control, and I was helpless.
One of the most heartbreaking moments was when my mom was unable to travel to watch my brother graduate from medical school. She was so far removed from the reality of the situation.
But despite the overwhelming challenges, I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received from the Alzheimer’s Association later on during my journey. Their 24/7 Helpline (1-800-272-3900) was a lifeline for me, providing invaluable guidance and emotional support when I needed it most. It was through their resources that I learned how to navigate the toughest days as a caregiver.
This is why I’m running in the Disney Princess Half Marathon, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Your support will help others who are experiencing similar hardships, providing them with the resources and support they need to care for their loved ones. Every step I take in the race will be dedicated to those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers."
